Martin Gardner (1914-2010)

Martin Gardner, known for popularizing recreational mathematics, passed away on May 22 at the age of 95. Scientific American has published “Profile: Martin Gardner, the Mathematical Gamester (1914-2010),” by Philip Yam, which begins, “He wrote Scientific American’s Mathematical Games column, educating and entertaining minds and launching the careers of generations of mathematicians.”

It was Martin Gardner’s article about the Penrose Tilings in the Scientific American, issue of January 1977, which inspired me most for the ongoing QC-project. It is a tragedy, that we will not have the possibility for showing a view of concerning their embedding in higher dimensional space to him any more … he is already there. May the God and Godesses rest his soul.
